If you’ve been following my blog, you would know that it’s only been about 3 months since I bought my 50″ 1080p plasma. I admit, I have been watching a lot of TV since, but didn’t think screen burn would set in just after 3 months!
I threw a bit of shit-fit once I saw two faint vertical bars on my screen last night – just where the 4:3 SD bars fall in place. UGH! My screen is supposed to have burn-in protection! I flipped through the manual a discovered a special screen-saver that you are supposed to run whenever burn-in starts to appear. Whew! It took about an hour of running the screen saver, but it cleared it up! The screen-saver is a bunch of vertical gradients that move from right to left. Over a period of time (a few hours) it will even out the display.
My screen also features pixel-shift technology – every minute it will move the entire image one pixel horizontally and vertically. You can’t even notice it. It also sports another screen-saver, which is basically an all-white image which should help remove any burn-in as well.
The burn-in I experienced has probably developed from watching Formula One in crappy standard definition with the lame side bars. All other programming I watch is in full 16:9 HD. Formula One amounts to about 8 hours of SD programming each race weekend. So it’s no surprise.
Every few weeks, I’ll run the screen savers to clean up any burn in.
